Class Central lists 1,014 SEO courses, and Udemy alone has 861. The digital marketing courses market, where SEO is the core module, is growing at an 11.8% CAGR to 2030, according to Technavio. So finding an SEO course is easy. Picking the right format for who you are, and practising on a real website from week one, is what decides whether you actually learn SEO at home.
TL;DR
If you go with a free training program, you are going to invest a week to a month learning basics that are not going to help much. So I suggest you learn from an SEO consultant who is still working on projects.
How can I learn SEO at home?
You need a laptop, a practice website, free Google Search Console and GA4 accounts, and 5 to 7 hours a week. After that, it is a choice between four formats.
| Format | Typical cost (India) | Best for | Main risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free | ₹0 | Testing whether you like SEO | No structure, no feedback |
| Self-paced | ₹500 to ₹35,000 | Disciplined learners on a budget | Most people never finish |
| Live cohort | ₹15,000 to ₹60,000+ | Freshers and professionals | Fixed class times |
| One-on-one | ₹50,000+ | Founders and specialists | Highest cost per hour |
New to the basics? Start with what SEO is in simple words.
In short: Learning SEO at home needs a practice site, free Google tools and 5 to 7 hours a week, then a choice of free, self-paced, live or one-on-one learning.
How can I learn SEO for free?
Yes, the foundations are free, and the best material comes from Google and the SEO tool companies:
- Google SEO Starter Guide: how Google wants sites built.
- Ahrefs Academy: free courses on SEO basics, AEO, local and technical SEO.
- Semrush Academy: free courses and exams. See my Semrush course review.
- HubSpot Academy: a content-led SEO certification.
- Moz Beginner’s Guide to SEO: the best reading guide.
What free resources miss is feedback. Nobody reviews your audit or tells you your internal linking is wrong, which is why most free learners plateau after two or three months.
In short: Google, Ahrefs, Semrush, HubSpot and Moz teach the fundamentals for free, but they cannot give feedback on your real work.
How can I learn SEO online for free in 30 days?
Spend one week on each block and apply every lesson to your practice site the same day.
| Week | Learn | Do on your site |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | How search works, crawling and indexing | Connect Search Console, submit a sitemap |
| 2 | Keyword research and intent | Map 10 keywords to pages |
| 3 | On-page and technical SEO | Fix titles and H1s, crawl with Screaming Frog |
| 4 | Off-page and local SEO | Earn 5 genuine links or citations |
Then take my free Advanced SEO Quiz. Below 60%, repeat the plan before paying for a course.
In short: Four weeks, four topics, one practice site, then a free quiz to check where you stand.
How can I learn SEO skills that employers pay for?
Treat SEO as seven skills and prove each one with a small project. When I interview candidates, I don’t ask which course they took. I ask what they fixed.
| Skill | Proof-of-skill project |
|---|---|
| Keyword and intent research | A keyword map for a 20-page site |
| On-page SEO | Before-and-after rewrite of 5 pages |
| Technical SEO | A full audit with prioritised fixes |
| Off-page and local SEO | A link plan and a Google Business Profile optimisation |
| Analytics (GA4, GSC) | A monthly report explaining why traffic moved |
| AEO and GEO | An AI-visibility check across 10 prompts (how to rank in ChatGPT and Perplexity) |
| AI and automation | One automated workflow, such as a weekly GSC report |
No job yet? Offer a free audit to a local clinic or shop. Three documented audits beat five certificates.
In short: Learn keyword research, on-page, technical, off-page, analytics, AEO/GEO and automation, each with a real project.
How to learn SEO and digital marketing together?
Go deep on SEO first, then add one channel that matches your goal. Broad courses that give SEO two weeks next to ads, email and social rarely make anyone job-ready.
- Agency or in-house job: add Google Ads and GA4.
- Content or freelancing: add content marketing and LinkedIn.
- Your own business: add Google Business Profile and email.
In short: SEO first, then one or two channels that fit your goal.
How to learn SEO online, step by step?
Follow an 8-week plan that ends with a portfolio, close to the order in my SEO curriculum:
- How search engines work, including how AI Overviews pick sources.
- Keyword research and intent, avoiding keyword cannibalization.
- Site architecture and on-page SEO.
- AEO and GEO, so AI tools can quote your pages.
- Technical SEO: robots.txt, sitemaps, canonicals, hreflang, Core Web Vitals, schema.
- Links and authority, including Google Business Profile.
- Tools and automation: Screaming Frog, GSC, GA4, Looker Studio and one AI workflow.
- Your portfolio: one audit, one keyword map, one results report, plus mock interviews.
The longer version is in how to learn SEO step by step.
In short: Eight weekly steps from search basics to a finished portfolio, all practised on a real site.
How to learn SEO through a course without wasting money?
Judge the trainer, the feedback and the projects, not the certificate. Before paying, check that:
- The trainer still does SEO for clients.
- Batches are small, ideally 10 to 25 learners.
- You audit and fix a real site.
- The syllabus covers AI Overviews, AEO/GEO and automation.
- Someone reviews your work every week, and recordings stay available.
- Placement claims are specific, not “100% guaranteed”.
I score individual programs out of 5 in my SEO course reviews.
In short: A practising trainer, small batches, real projects, an updated syllabus and weekly feedback matter more than any certificate.
Which path fits you: fresher, professional or founder?
The right route depends on what you need SEO to do for you: a job, a promotion or revenue.
How should a fresher learn SEO at home?
Start with one month of free learning, then join a live cohort. Many freshers have free certificates but can’t answer “What would you fix first on this site?” in an interview. You need deadlines, weekly feedback, mock interviews and 2 to 3 written-up audits.
How should a working professional learn SEO at home?
Skip the basics and join an advanced live batch that runs evenings or weekends. Focus on what changes fastest: technical SEO, AEO/GEO, reporting for leadership and AI workflows. Choose one-on-one only if you are stuck on one area, such as a migration or international SEO.
How should a founder learn SEO at home?
Choose a one-on-one program built around your own site, or a live cohort if budget is tight. You don’t need to become an SEO executive. You need enough to set strategy, judge agencies and tie SEO to leads. See is SEO worth it for a small business.
In short: Freshers should go free first, then live. Professionals should take an advanced live batch. Founders should go one-on-one on their own site.
Who are the top 5 players in each format?
This is my shortlist as of October 2026. I run Mohit’s SEO Training, so weigh my view with that in mind.

FAQs
Can I learn SEO without a technical background?
Yes. I regularly teach commerce and arts graduates who have never opened a website backend. Within a few weeks they are fixing titles and canonical tags in WordPress, because every technical topic is tied to a problem on their own site.
How long does it take to learn SEO at home?
About 2 to 3 months to become job-ready at 5 to 7 hours a week, and 6 to 12 months to become genuinely good.
Is a free SEO certificate enough to get a job?
Rarely. Recruiters see the same certificates on hundreds of CVs. A before-and-after Search Console screenshot from a site you improved gets you the interview.
Is SEO still worth learning with AI search?
Yes. AI Overviews, ChatGPT and Perplexity still pull answers from websites. Making those sites easy to find and quote is now called AEO and GEO, and it is built on top of classic SEO.
How much does it cost to learn SEO in India?
From ₹0 to over ₹1 lakh. Self-paced courses cost up to about ₹35,000, live cohorts ₹15,000 to ₹60,000, and one-on-one starts around ₹50,000.
In short: No technical background needed, 2 to 3 months to job-ready, and portfolios beat certificates.
So, what is the best way to learn SEO at home?
Start free, practise on a real website, and pick the format that matches who you are. If you are serious about both learning and execution, always go with a live program. Recorded courses tell you what to do. A live program with a working trainer and a small batch makes you do it every week, with someone reviewing your audit and questioning your keyword map.
See the Advanced Online SEO Training curriculum, or contact me and I will point you to the right route, even if it is a free one.
In short: Start free and practise on a real site. If you are serious about learning and execution, choose a live program.
